    How cute! I love that this is accessible for pre-reading with my kinders, but also includes basic rhythms. I’ve been stuck on how to incorporate instruments and composing for my younger students. This is just the ticket!

    I over think these things – I wish there was a more detailed lesson plan. I’m trying to figure out how this will work best – I have groups of 30 (kindergarten). What do you recommend? Small group activity? One student writes and she gets a group to perform?

      I think this could be done in a variety of ways:
      1. Individuals
      2. Groups of 2: Kids each responsible for 2 lines and one instrument each (use 2 instruments, they each play their instrument when it is indicated.) (Or more instruments if they are capable…maybe 1st/2nd grade).
      3. Groups of 4: Kids each responsible for writing one line (use 4 instruments, they each play their instrument when it is indicated.)
      4. Write a group composition: Make it the length you want. Maybe each kid adds one shape to a grid you put up or draw on the board. (Or print a few and project them) Kids all have one instrument. Then they play as a group.

    Would be better if the sticks were notated as an X rather than a square… easily confused with the rectangle for the drum, if using the drum as the rectangle and not the circle. I just added a dry-erase X through the square to easily distinguish for my students.
