June 21st is Make Music Day. The party started in France in 1983 and has been gaining steam ever since! Here are a few ideas for you to participate in Make Music Day either at home or with your students, even if you can’t celebrate it ON June 21st with your students.

  • Give an impromptu concert. Play on your porch, in the school entry doors, or at a local park
  • Invite students to play singing games are recess
  • Play for nursing home residents
  • Host a mommy and me class for young children
  • Have students share how they make music at home
  • Have students share if they participate in music groups that highlight their heritage/culture/background
  • Make your own instrument day
  • Have students compose and play a song for each other
  • Add music to your school’s outdoor area such as wind chimes!
  • Create a class play list. Have studendts create body percussion for some of the songs or a boomwhacker accompaniment
  • Have an all school sing along. Pick camp songs that are students favorites and easy to learn!
  • Outdoor drum classes such as ball drums, or bucket drums
  • Have an instrument petting zoo or ask the local high school or college to come and bring some students for demonstrations.
