Post Office is a fun game that is perfect for practicing decoding rhythms and patterns and even works as assessments. Take a look at how you play this fun game which is perfect for quick individual assessments!
Set Up:
Print pattern cards, cut, and place them all in an envelope with a number on it. Make one set for each student.
(Pro Tip: number on the back of each card in each set in case they get mixed up!)
How to Play
Each child gets an envelope with the same melodic patterns. Start with a smaller number of patterns if you wish to make things easier for students. The Postman (the teacher or it can be another student), reads a pattern and the students need to find the pattern in their envelope.
Melody Variation: Read each pattern 3 times. The first time students sing it back. The second time students sing and sign the pattern. The third time students find the pattern in their envelope.
Rhythm Variation: Read each pattern 3 times. The first time students clap it back. The second time students sing and say the rhythm syllables. The third time students find the pattern in their envelope.
Why It’s Awesome
- Can be used as a quick assessment for decoding.
- Put students in teams or pairs when decoding is new for supported practice
- Easy set up!
- Easy enough for 1st grade to play!
